Understand Your Early Start Options

CSUSB Early Start Details

If you are an incoming freshman, and you have not demonstrated proficiency in English and mathematics through the English Placement Test (EPT) and Entry Level Math (ELM) or one of the acceptable waivers, you must participate in the Early Start Program.

The Early Start program takes place the summer before your freshman year.

When you receive notification that you have been admitted, the campus will provide you with information about how you can log in to My Coyote, visit the "Student Center" section, click on "Academics" and indicate where you will satisfy the Early Start requirement.

Am I required to participate in Early Start?

Mathematics:
All students who have not demonstrated college readiness in math (ELM score less than 50) must participate in an Early Start math program.

English:
All students who have not demonstrated college readiness in English (EPT score 137 or below) must participate in an Early Start English program.

Who is exempt from Early Start?

Exemptions: The following students will not be required to participate in any Early Start program:

  • International students and residents of other states;
  • Students participating in the CSUSB EOP Summer Bridge program
  • Students admitted after August 1, 2013
  • Students who were conditionally exempt in math based on their Early Assessment Program score.
  • Students whose appeals for exemption are granted.

Are you unsure about whether or not you are exempt from Early Start? Visit our Early Start Options page to view score ranges, contact the Testing Office at 909-537-5045, or email retentionmatters@csusb.edu.

What are the consequences if I do not fulfill Early Start?

CSUSB students who are required to attend Early Start but fail to do so risk dis-enrollment for Fall 2013. Other consequences may also apply.

How do I register for Early Start?

Before enrolling in Early Start, view the Early Start videos, which explain the program, options, and sign up process. For instructions on the Early start sign up process, visit the Early Start Sign Up and Enrollment Instructions on the New Student Checklist provided by the Office of Advising and Academic Services.
