Do's and Don'ts of Mentoring

Don'ts

Don't think that everyone in your group will immediately be friends.
Don't judge your group members based on their backgrounds or ideas.
Don't share anything that others tell you in confidence.
Don't be late for group meetings.
Don't forget about your group when you get busy with other things.
Don't always meet with your group in the same place think of new and creative ideas.
Don't ignore messages from others in your group or the program office.
Don't hesitate to tell your Faculty Coordinator if your group isn't meeting.
Don't forget to ask the others in your group what they're interested in.
Don't be afraid to ask questions that you think are silly or unimportant.
Don't forget that frequent communication is the key to successful mentorship groups .

Do's

Do listen to what other group members are saying.
Do communicate by e-mail, phone and in face-to-face interactions.
Do remember to attend all scheduled events.
Do show care and concern for the others in your group.
Do let others know if you won't be attending an event.
Do be a friend.
Do be honest.
Do return all messages from others in your group immediately.
Do share any questions or concerns you might have with others.
Do respect the time and efforts others put into your group.
Do share with others the ideas you have for the group.
Do be persistent and patient when scheduling meeting times.
