What is the purpose of the CSET?

The CSET program that provides tests and other services for states to use as a part of their teacher certification program.

Who should take the CSET?

In California, a Single Subject Teaching Credential authorizes an individual to teach a specific subject, usually in secondary schools, grades 7-12. A multiple Subject Teaching Credential enables teaching of all subjects at any level. To obtain any credential, a person is required to verify his/her subject matter competence. This can be done by:
  • Completing a subject matter preparation program in a California college or university approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) fulfills the requirement.
  • Individuals who have obtained a degree outside of California should check with an advisor at a California college with CCTC approval to determine in equivalent coursework has been completed.
-OR-
  • By passing one or more subject matter tests adopted by the CCTC.
For more information, or any questions, please contact the College of Education, Student Services CE 102, (909) 537-5609.

When should the CSET be taken?

Each University/Employer has specific deadlines for submission of test scores. You should therefore allow appropriate time for the receipt of scores.

How do I prepare for the CSET?
