When do you give the EPT/ELM Exams?

The EPT/ELM Exams are given multiple Saturdays a year. Please check the Testing Office website for CSU San Bernardinoís Test Schedule. If you wish to test at another campus, you can go to the ETS website for all CSU Campuses www.ets.org/csu to see every CSU Campusís test schedule.

Where can I take the test?

You may take the EPT/ELM Exams at your closest Cal State campus. You need not take it at the CSU campus you are planning on attending. Send in your registration form to the campus at which you want to test.

Are you offering the EPT/ELM Exams at the Palm Desert Campus?

Due to budget cuts, the EPT and ELM are being offered once at the Palm Desert Campus: March 16, 2013.

How do I sign up for the EPT/ELM?

The only way to sign up for the EPT/ELM exams is to register online at the ETS website: www.ets.org/csu The CSU campuses no longer accept paper registration forms.

How much do the tests cost?

Each test is $18.00. If you are planning to take both the EPT/ELM your test fee will be $36.00. Payment is made at time of registration by credit card, online check, or pay pal.

How long does it take to get my scores?

Your scores can take up to four weeks to be reported to you and the Cal State campus you choose on the day of the test. The testing company, ETS mails out your scores, the Testing Office does not. Using the PIN created on the day of the test, students can access their test scores from the ETS website for all CSU Campuses www.ets.org/csu approximately three weeks after each test date.

When should I take the tests?

We recommend that you take your tests as soon as possible. Do not wait until the last minute. Most CSU campuses require that your test scores are on file before you can register for your classes.

What do the EPT and ELM Exams cover?

The EPT Test does not ask for any information other than reading and writing skills. You develop these skills with steady practice over a number of years. The EPT (English Placement Test) has an essay to measure writing skills, and also two multiple choice sections that cover English structure and reading comprehension.

The ELM Exam is designed to assess knowledge and skills relevant to mathematics typically covered in three years of rigorous college preparatory mathematics including (1) Elementary and Intermediate Algebra, and (2) Plane Geometry.

Where can I get a study guide for the exam(s)?

The CSU publication Focus on English available in a high school counselorís guidance office and the English Departments located on all CSU Campuses. It can also be found at http://www.calstate.edu/ar/EPT.PDF. (NOTE: You will need Acrobat Reader to view this document. It is available as a free download.)

An algebra review text, learning assistance center, or a copy of the ELM Problem Book may be of use in helping you prepare for the ELM. The ELM Problem Book is available for purchase in any CSU campus bookstore or for free online at http://www.calstate.edu/ar/ELMProblemBook01_02.pdf. You should also look at Focus on Mathematics http://www.calstate.edu/eap/documents/fom.pdf. (NOTE: You will need Acrobat Reader to view these documents. It is available as a free download.)
